Uncertainty in the Management of Tropical Peatlands for Oil Palm Plantations due to Drainage Practices

چکیده
The conversion of tropical peatlands to oil palm plantations has affected the long-term storage stability water and carbon. requires a drainage system that results in land subsidence and, turn, reduces carrying capacity carbon stocks. This study aims analyze from observations (2004-2020) obtain an appropriate management measure for three scenarios depths at Jambi Province. It is found reduction quite variable depending on level depths. was 55 cm, 49 34.7 cm deep, moderate, shallow conditions. groundwater deeper than 100 which far below threshold 40 as stated government regulations. However, regulations are still debated since must occur drained regardless level. observed large implies better new site crucial necessary reduce impact degradation relative current conditions high rates should be accepted inevitable change plantations.

Nitrogen management is essential to prevent tropical oil palm plantations from causing ground-level ozone pollution.
More than half the world's rainforest has been lost to agriculture since the Industrial Revolution. Among the most widespread tropical crops is oil palm (Elaeis guineensis): global production now exceeds 35 million tonnes per year. In Malaysia, for example, 13% of land area is now oil palm plantation, compared with 1% in 1974. There are enormous pressures to increase palm oil production for foo...

The Malaysian oil palm industry is one of the most highly organised sectors of any national agriculture system of the world. Today, though, the focus has shifted to how well agriculture also meets universally accepted standards of sustainability. This paper highlights the development of oil palm cultivation and responsible farming practices in Malaysia, the world’s largest producer of palm oil....

Degradation of Root Community Traits as Indicator for Transformation of Tropical Lowland Rain Forests into Oil Palm and Rubber Plantations
Conversion of tropical forests into intensely managed plantations is a threat to ecosystem functions. On Sumatra, Indonesia, oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) plantations are rapidly expanding, displacing rain forests and extensively used rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) agro-forests. Here, we tested the influence of land use systems on root traits including chemical traits (carbon, nitrogen, mineral nut...

Rising global demands for food and biofuels are driving forest clearance in the tropics. Oil-palm expansion contributes to biodiversity declines and carbon emissions in Southeast Asia. However, the magnitudes of these impacts remain largely unquantified until now. We produce a 250-m spatial resolution map of closed canopy oil-palm plantations in the lowlands of Peninsular Malaysia (2 million ha...
